New Support Initiative For Domestic Abuse Victims

A new signposting initiative has been launched for victims of domestic violence across the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council area, developed through collaboration between the PSNI and the local Policing & Community Safety Partnership (PCSP).

The core of the initiative is a QR code designed to discreetly direct victims of domestic violence to accessible support services within their area.

Officers across the borough will carry the QR code on business cards and their work-issued phones, allowing them to engage with and support victims immediately. The code will also be made available on posters in local premises, including hotels and commercial buildings.

Inspector Kelly Moffett of the Armagh Neighbourhood Policing Team, who helped develop the idea, said the initiative was inspired by working with a high-risk missing person who was a victim of domestic abuse, noting that foreign nationals and those financially dependent on their abuser often do not know where to access services like social security or food banks.

The QR code takes victims directly to a page on the local council website, providing contact details for readily available support services. Inspector Moffett hopes that informing a victim of the services available could be the "deciding factor" in them making a statement to police.

The initiative has already been rolled out to all officers in the district, and copies of the information are also available in braille. Plans are underway to produce the information in different languages and adapt the material for other policing districts.
