Civil Service Launches Recruitment Drive For 200 Apprentices
A recruitment campaign for 200 new apprenticeship roles across the Northern Ireland Civil Service has been announced by Finance Minister John O'Dowd.
The Operational Delivery Apprenticeship Scheme 2025 aims to fill a range of frontline positions across various government departments, offering a starting salary of £25,796.
Joining the launch were Communities Minister Gordon Lyons and Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald.
Minister O'Dowd championed the scheme as a "great opportunity" for applicants to begin a successful career. He emphasised that the scheme allows apprentices to "earn while they learn" while playing a crucial role in delivering essential frontline services, such as assessing claims, making decisions regarding benefits, and dealing with customer enquiries.
Crucially, no previous experience or qualifications are required to apply. Apprentices will undertake a relevant qualification during working hours while being supervised by a dedicated mentor. Communities Minister Gordon Lyons highlighted the pivotal role his department played in shaping the initiative, calling it a testament to their commitment to creating meaningful opportunities.
"The Operational Delivery Apprenticeship Scheme is a gateway to a fulfilling career in public service. It's about building skills, gaining confidence, and making a lasting impact on people's lives," he said.
Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald reinforced the value of the programme, stating that these apprenticeships provide a "tried and tested route to good jobs" and represent a vital first step into public service for the "leaders of tomorrow".
Applications for the scheme opened on Monday, 20 October 2025, and close at noon on Friday, 7 November 2025. Appointments are scheduled to begin in March / April 2026.
Further information on the scheme and how to apply is available on the NICS recruitment website.
