Viable Pipe Bomb Device Found In L'Derry

A major security alert in the Waterside area of L'Derry has ended after police confirmed that a viable device was located and made safe.

Detective Inspector Hanbidge said police received a report shortly after 5.35pm on Saturday, 25 October 2025, that a device had been left at a residential property in the Campion Court area. Officers attended the scene alongside Ammunition Technical Officers (ATO).

Following examination, the device was deemed to be viable and was made safe before being removed for further forensic examination. The security operation concluded on Sunday, 26 October 2025.

Detective Inspector Hanbidge stated that the device "posed a serious risk to the local community," adding, "We're thankful it did not detonate before it was discovered."

A number of local residents had to be evacuated from their homes during the safety operation, and police thanked them for their patience.

Officers will maintain a presence in the area today as enquiries continue. Police are appealing for anyone with information related to the incident to contact them on 101, quoting reference number 1161 of 25/10/25. 'Viable Device' Found In Newtownabbey
A 'viable device' has been found in Newtownabbey in the midst of a security alert. The device was discovered in the Cherrylands/Cloughfern area shortly after 06:00 this morning. The area was cordoned off as army bomb experts examined the device and carried out a controlled explosion.

An explosive device found during a security alert in west Belfast was "designed to kill or seriously injure police officers", according to the PSNI. The alert, which has now ended, was on the Brians Well road area in Poleglass on Saturday, 14 January.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.
