Communities Minister Commits To Drive Change In NI Boxing

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has voiced his support for the continuing positive role amateur boxing plays in community relations across Northern Ireland.

The Minister's remarks followed his welcoming of a new report from the Equality Commission, which focused on the governance, practices, and procedures of the Ulster Boxing Council.

Mr. Lyons stated his firm belief that discrimination must have "no place in boxing or in any sport in Northern Ireland." He specifically welcomed the report's recommendations, noting they are structured according to the provisions of the Fair Employment and Treatment (Northern Ireland) Order 1998.

In a commitment to implementing the necessary changes, the Minister announced that he will establish an oversight panel under his direct control to monitor progress for the next 18 months. The ultimate goal, he confirmed, is to ensure that boxing becomes genuinely inclusive and accessible to all communities, with fair access to elite competition pathways.

He stated that the required change will be driven by his department, ensuring that "no boxer's right to selection is ever again contested in court".
