Justice Minister To Seek Higher Sentences Following Officer Assaults
Justice Minister Naomi Long has given her support to the Deputy Chief Constable’s appeal for the public to back the PSNI and its staff, following a spate of serious assaults on officers, including the stabbing that occurred in L’Derry last night.
Minister Long began by stating her thoughts were with the injured police officers and staff, alongside their families and colleagues. She noted that the PSNI's commitment to protecting the public continues "day and night, every day," particularly as the holiday period approaches.
The Minister expressed her frustration that an appeal must again be made to the public to support the PSNI in its crucial work. Citing PSNI figures, she highlighted the staggering number of attacks, noting there were 2,630 (two thousand, six hundred and thirty) assaults on police personnel between October 2024 and September 2025.
Minister Long stressed the impact of these attacks on public safety: "It means fewer officers available to respond to 999 calls, provide neighbourhood policing, investigate crimes, prepare files for court proceedings and the list goes on."
In response to the escalating violence, the Minister confirmed her intention to introduce new legislation in the new year. This legislation will provide for higher sentences for assaults committed against any person who is providing public services or performing a public duty, including police officers. Concluding her statement, Minister Long said: "One attack on a police officer is one attack too many – it is beyond unacceptable that we see so many attacks on those who seek to keep our communities safe. It has to stop. And it has to stop now."
Also condemning the incident, SDLP MP Colum Eastwood said: "This was a vicious attack on police officers in the early hours of Thursday morning that could have had horrific consequences. One officer was left in hospital after being stabbed in the leg and I understand that protective equipment prevented more serious wounds.
"Police officers and other emergency service personnel understand that they will face difficult and dangerous circumstances but no one should have to worry about being stabbed in the discharge of their duties. The level of assaults on emergency service staff is unacceptable and it should be taken seriously by Ministers.
"I wish the officers involved a quick recovery and return to their important work keeping our communities safe."
DUP Foyle MLA Gary Middleton added: "I am shocked and appalled to learn that a police officer was stabbed while on duty in the Collon Lane area of Londonderry this morning.
"I have spoken directly to the Chief Superintendent to convey my full support for the injured officer, who I understand required hospital treatment for a stab wound to the leg. My thoughts are also with the other officers and staff who were assaulted during this serious incident.
"Attacks on our emergency services are completely unacceptable. Officers go out every day to keep our community safe and they should be able to do so without fear of violence. I wish the officer a speedy recovery."
