Newry Street Lighting Upgrade Gets Underway
A major project to modernise the street lighting along Abbey Way in Newry has officially begun, following an announcement by Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins.
The £200,000 initiative focuses on the stretch of Abbey Way running from Margaret Street to the Kilmorey Street junction. As part of the upgrades, 30 new lighting columns will be erected, supported by a brand-new underground cable network. The project also includes the transition to energy-efficient LED technology. Highlighting the local impact of the project, Minister Kimmins, said: "This is a substantial investment for the Newry area which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to investing in and improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
To limit disruption for the local community, the Department for Infrastructure has scheduled lane closures to take place only during off-peak hours, specifically between 09:30 and 16:00, Monday to Friday. While efforts are being made to minimise delays, commuters are advised to plan for extra travel time.
If weather conditions remain favourable, the project is expected to be largely finished by Friday 30 January 2026.
