Police Appeal Following Arson Attack In L'Derry

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is appealing for witnesses after a house in the Circular Road area of L'Derry was targeted in a suspected petrol bomb attack.

The incident occurred at approximately 6.45pm on Monday, 5 January. A man and a woman who were inside the property at the time managed to put out the fire that broke out in their living room. While both occupants escaped physical injury, police confirmed they were left "badly shaken" by the ordeal.

The attack resulted in damage to the living room floor and a window. Detectives are currently investigating the motive behind the incident.

Detective Sergeant Higgins stated: "We received a report at approximately 6.45pm on Monday, 5th January that a suspected petrol bomb had been thrown through the window of a property in the Circular Road area.

"The occupants of the house, a man and woman, were able to extinguish the fire that ignited in the living room area. They were both uninjured, but left badly shaken by what happened.

"As a result of this arson attack, some damage was caused to the window – and living room floor area. We are treating this matter as arson with intent to endanger life, and enquiries are ongoing today to determine a motive and who was involved."

Investigating officers are particularly interested in the movements of a green saloon car and three men seen on foot near the time of the attack. It is believed the vehicle approached from the Creggan Heights area and fled via Southway.

Detective Sergeant Higgins added: "We are especially keen to hear from anyone who observed a green saloon vehicle, or three men on foot at the time of the report.

"It's understood the vehicle travelled from the direction of the Creggan Heights area, and left in the direction of Southway."

Anyone with information, CCTV, or dash-cam footage is urged to contact the PSNI on 101, quoting reference 1315 05/01/26. Reports can also be submitted online at www.psni.police.uk/makeareport, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
