Three teenagers die in road accident

Three teenagers have died following a road traffic accident in Co Down early this morning.

The boys, two of whom are believed to be 19 and the other 17 years of age, died after the Peugeot 307 they were travelling in collided with a lorry on the Belfast Road near Newry, shortly after midnight.

The three victims were pronounced dead at the scene whilst the driver of the lorry escaped injury but was left deeply shocked by the incident.

The road between the Derrycraw Road junction and the Four Mile crossroads remains closed as police continue to investigate the crash.

Newry and Armagh Ulster Unionist Assembly member Danny Kennedy expressed his sympathy to the families of the men killed.

“This is heartbreaking news which has shocked the community and our thoughts are with those who have been so tragically bereaved," Mr Kennedy said.

“These three young people had their whole lives ahead of them and it is difficult to comprehend the devastation this accident has caused their loved ones.”
