PSNI Launches Major Recruitment Drive
The PSNI has launched a wide-reaching recruitment campaign seeking both new student officers and Custody Detention Officers to join the service.
The multi-faceted advertising campaign will run over the next three weeks across broadcast, print, and digital platforms. It is designed to attract a diverse range of applicants for the 22-week student officer training programme, with a particular focus on ensuring the service is representative of the entire community it serves.
Chief Constable Jon Boutcher described policing as more than just a job, calling it a chance to make a meaningful difference every day. He highlighted that new recruits will receive comprehensive training and a starting salary of £35,000, alongside ongoing professional development.
"We’re looking for individuals who care about their communities, who want to work with them to help others, and who are ready to step into roles that truly matter," Mr Boutcher said. "There is no other job like it and we want people from all walks of life, from all communities, to join us." The campaign will include various outreach and engagement activities aimed at encouraging applications from under-represented groups. The Chief Constable added that if individuals possess integrity, compassion, and a willingness to learn, they should consider a career with the service he described as the "best in the world."
Justice Minister Naomi Long welcomed the launch, noting that recovering the PSNI workforce has been a key priority. She stated that the funding delivered to increase officer numbers provides a rewarding opportunity for those looking to make a positive difference.
The Northern Ireland Policing Board has also voiced its support. Board Chair Mukesh Sharma emphasized that policing offers an attractive career with opportunities for promotion and progression. He echoed the call for the service to be fully reflective of the community's diversity.
Applications for student officer roles will close on Wednesday 4 February 2026, while the deadline for Custody Detention Officers is Monday 9 February 2026. Prospective applicants can find more information and apply via the official recruitment website at joinpsni.co.uk.
