Executive Approves Next Steps For Non-Domestic RHI Scheme Shut Down

Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald has welcomed a decision by the Executive to approve her proposals for the formal closure of the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme.

The move marks a definitive step in fulfilling the commitment made under the New Decade, New Approach agreement to wind down the programme. Following the Executive's backing, the Department for the Economy will now move to finalise the necessary regulations and prepare for an orderly shutdown before Ofgem ceases its administrative role for the scheme.

In a written statement addressed to Assembly members, the Minister emphasised that the decision brings much-needed clarity to the situation. Dr Caoimhe Archibald stated: "Today's agreement is a significant step towards delivering the commitment set out in New Decade, New Approach to close the RHI scheme. It provides clarity and certainty on the way forward. The approach reflects the outcome of the public consultation and ensures a closure process that is fair, transparent and robust, balancing the interests of participants and taxpayers."

With the Executive's approval secured, the Department is now tasked with presenting the final regulations for scrutiny by the Assembly. Operational planning is also underway to ensure the transition is managed effectively for all stakeholders involved.
