Final Phase of Newry Improvement Scheme Announced

The Department for Infrastructure has announced the second and final phase of a major public realm and road improvement scheme for Merchants Quay and Sugar Island in Newry City. This project is being delivered alongside the previously announced works on the A27 New Street and is partially funded by the Department for Communities.

The scheme involves the asphalt resurfacing of 980 metres of several prominent city centre streets. The works will cover:

• Canal Street: From the junction with Erskine Street to the junction with Sugar House Quay.

• Erskine Street: From the junction with Canal Street to the junction with Canal Quay.

• Sugar Island: From the junction with Sugar House Quay to the junction with Basin Walk.

• Merchants Quay: A 150-metre section from the junction with Canal Street.

To ensure the safety of both workers and the public, the Department will implement a series of night-time and Sunday road closures. While the specific dates for these closures are to be confirmed, the Department has designed the traffic management plan to minimise disruption as much as possible.

Local access will be maintained where feasible, but motorists are advised to expect delays and allow extra travel time when navigating the area. All road users are asked to adhere to temporary traffic restrictions throughout the duration of the works.

Barring any significant weather delays, the Department expects the scheme to be substantially complete by Sunday, 1 March 2026. The public will be kept informed of any changes to this schedule as the project progresses.
