Grand Opera House Marks Anniversary With Donation

The Grand Opera House has celebrated a major milestone by raising a remarkable £130,000 for The Children's Cancer Unit Charity. The conclusion of this two-year partnership coincides with the iconic Belfast theatre's 130th anniversary, providing a poignant link between its century-long history and its commitment to the local community.

The charity, which provides essential support for children and young people across Northern Ireland following a cancer diagnosis, was originally selected by the Theatre's staff. The final total was achieved through the generosity of audience collections and a dedicated programme of employee-led fundraising initiatives.

Among the highlights of the collaboration were five sell-out performances of Broadway and Beyond, staged by the Grand Opera House team in the Theatre's Studio. All ticket proceeds from these shows were donated directly to the cause.

The funds will support the charity's vital operations at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, including the provision of specialist medical staff, cutting-edge equipment, and infrastructure. It also funds research and support services for families navigating the challenges of a childhood cancer diagnosis.

Ian Wilson, Chief Executive of the Grand Opera House, praised the collective effort, stating: "The Grand Opera House is committed to making an impact both on and off stage and has a long history of supporting local charities. As the Theatre marks 130 years at the heart of Northern Ireland's cultural life, raising £130,000 for the Children's Cancer Unit stands as a powerful example of what can be achieved when audiences, staff and performers come together for a shared cause. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved for their kindness and generosity, and I hope this donation will help make a meaningful difference to the charity, and the children and families it supports."

Jane Hoare, Chief Executive of The Children's Cancer Unit Charity, expressed her gratitude: "We are thrilled with the amazing total raised by the Grand Opera House and are so thankful to all the staff, audiences and cast who have donated. This money will make a significant contribution to the support services we deliver to children, young people and their families. It has been a pleasure to work with the Grand Opera House team during the last two years, and we have been so impressed by their commitment and generosity."

While the partnership has officially concluded, the Grand Opera House has confirmed that a new charity partner has already been selected by staff, with an official announcement expected in March 2026.
