Six Arrested During Overnight Police Operation in Belfast Area

Police have arrested six people for driving while unfit through drink or drugs during a string of overnight incidents in and around Belfast on Saturday, 28 February, and the early hours of Sunday, 1 March. The group includes four men in their 30s, along with a man and a woman both in their 60s. All six were taken into custody and have since been charged.

In the Sprucefield area, a 61-year-old man was arrested and charged with several offences, including driving while unfit through drink or drugs. He is scheduled to appear at Lisburn Magistrates' Court today, Monday, 2 March.

A 34-year-old man, apprehended in the Steele Road area of Dunmurry, faces charges of driving with excess alcohol in his breath. He is expected to appear before Belfast Magistrates' Court on Friday, 27 March.

Two other men were charged with failing to provide a specimen while driving with excess alcohol: a 33-year-old arrested on Ormeau Road in South Belfast and a 30-year-old arrested on King Street in the city centre. Both are due at Belfast Magistrates' Court on 27 March.

Additionally, a 30-year-old man arrested in the Oldpark area of North Belfast was charged with driving with excess alcohol in his breath and is set for a court appearance in Belfast on 27 March. A 64-year-old woman faces the same charge and is due to appear before Newtownards Magistrates' Court on the same date. As per standard procedure, the Public Prosecution Service will review all charges.

Inspector Douglas commented on the operations: "The weekend's arrests demonstrate how the fast actions of our officers removed these reckless individuals from our roads and prevented someone from being seriously injured or worse.

"So far this year, 15 people have lost their lives on our roads so I am appealing to everyone to play their part in reducing further deaths and injuries.

"Our appeal is for everyone to remember the fatal five and the devastating consequences failing to follow these can have - don't drink or take drugs and drive; slow down; don't be careless; always wear your seat belt and never use your mobile phone while driving.

"We will continue our work to put a stop to this careless and selfish behaviour, and if you suspect someone is driving under the influence, contact police immediately."
