PHA Confirms Probable Meningitis Case In Belfast Secondary School
The Public Health Agency (PHA) has confirmed it is managing a probable case of bacterial meningitis involving a pupil at a secondary school in Belfast.
Health officials have stated that all necessary public health actions have been completed. As a precautionary measure, the PHA has worked closely with the school to issue guidance to parents and guardians. Additionally, relevant information has been shared with Emergency Departments and GP Out-of-Hours services across the region.
All individuals identified as close contacts have undergone a risk assessment and, where appropriate, have been provided with antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent further spread. The PHA continues to monitor the situation closely. While the agency is also tracking a recent meningitis incident in Kent through regular UK-wide briefings, it confirmed there is currently no evidence of spread from the South East of England to Northern Ireland.
Staff, students, and families are urged to remain vigilant. Symptoms of meningitis can develop suddenly and may include:
• A high temperature (fever) over 37.5°C (99.5°F)
• Vomiting or being sick
• A severe headache
• A stiff neck
• A dislike of bright lights
• Drowsiness or unresponsiveness
• Seizures (fits)
• A blotchy rash that does not fade when a glass is rolled over it (note: this does not always develop)
The PHA advises that anyone who suspects they or a family member may have meningitis should act fast and seek medical assistance immediately.
