SDLP West Belfast Councillor Paul Doherty has raised serious concerns regarding reports of large groups using scramblers within Falls Park. It is understood that approximately 20 vehicles were involved in instances of anti-social behaviour in the area this past Sunday.

Addressing the incident, Councillor Doherty highlighted the impact this activity is having on the local community. He said: "Large numbers of young people on scramblers were again involved in anti-social behaviour in Falls Park on Sunday night, causing disruption and concern for local residents. This is a public space that the community has invested heavily in and it must remain open and welcoming for everyone." The councillor confirmed that he has been in contact with the police regarding the ongoing situation. While emphasising a desire to prevent young people from entering the criminal justice system, he stressed that public safety and the respectful use of shared spaces must be prioritised.

"I have engaged with police on this issue and while the last thing we want is for any young person to end up with a criminal record, there must be respect for the park and for public safety," he added.

Highlighting the need for a long-term solution, Councillor Doherty noted that he has previously proposed the creation of dedicated sites for scrambler use to help divert such activity away from residential public parks. However, he warned that the current situation is unsustainable, concluding: "We need to look at alternative ways to address this issue and I have brought forward proposals around dedicated sites for scrambler use. However, this behaviour cannot be allowed to continue and action is needed before someone is seriously hurt."
