Assembly Approves Establishment of Just Transition Commission
DAERA Minister Andrew Muir has hailed the Assembly's approval of legislation to establish a Just Transition Commission as a "significant milestone" for climate action in Northern Ireland.
The Commission has been tasked with a vital role: ensuring that the region's transition to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions is managed in a way that is equitable and does not leave specific communities or industries behind.
The establishment of this body follows the recent publication of the Executive's Climate Mitigation Programme (NICCAP 3) and ongoing progress on the draft Climate Action Plan. Minister Muir commented: "Today marks another important step in our climate action journey. The Just Transition Commission will help ensure emissions reduction is delivered in an inclusive, fair and sustainable way. At the heart of this work is ensuring fairness – addressing climate change through investment in clean energy, warm homes, sustainable public transport, active travel, supporting sustainable agriculture, improving our environment and further developing our circular economy."
To ensure a broad perspective, the Commission will feature representatives from several key sectors, including:
• Agriculture and the Environment
• Energy and Transport
• Green Finance
• Trade Unions and Youth Groups
Next Steps: Public Appointments
Following the Assembly's approval, a public appointments process is set to commence shortly. Minister Muir confirmed his commitment to establishing the body "without delay."
The recruitment will be conducted in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments Code of Practice to ensure a transparent and merit-based process.
"These roles offer a unique opportunity to help shape fair, inclusive and representative decarbonisation policy," the Minister added, emphasising that the transition offers the potential for healthier communities and greater food and energy security.
