PSNI Investigate Disorder at L'Derry Interface
Police in L'Derry are appealing for information following a period of disorder at an interface in the Irish Street area of the city on the evening of Friday, 1st May.
The incident began at approximately 9:45pm when a group of around 15 young people, with their faces covered and carrying flags, gathered as a band parade passed through the vicinity. While the group initially engaged with officers on the scene, they left briefly before returning armed with petrol bombs, paint bombs, and heavy masonry.
During the ensuing disorder, these items were thrown at police, resulting in minor damage to two service vehicles. Superintendent Sinead McIldowney confirmed that no injuries were reported among officers or members of the public, and no properties were damaged. Calm was eventually restored to the area by 1am on Saturday morning. Superintendent McIldowney said: "We are continuing to engage with local representatives and the wider community in order to help prevent further instances of this behaviour. We would particularly ask parents and guardians to speak to their children so they know where they area, and that they do not become involved in such reckless behaviour that could lead to someone getting hurt."
She added that the diversion of police resources to handle the disorder was "completely unacceptable," noting that those involved risk long-term consequences to their future.
Enquiries are ongoing, and police have stated that proactive arrests will be made following further investigation. Anyone with information or who can assist in identifying those responsible is urged to contact the police on 101, quoting reference number 1773 01/05/26. Alternatively, reports can be made online via the PSNI website or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
