£605,000 Ballymena Road Improvement Scheme Underway
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced a £605,000 resurfacing project for a 1.3km stretch of the A42 Galgorm Road in Ballymena. The upgrade works, running between the Sourhill Road roundabout and Grange Road, are scheduled to begin on Monday 18 May 2026 and are projected to take 13 weeks to complete.
Minister Kimmins said: "This is a substantial investment for the Ballymena area which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents, local businesses, and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
To ensure the safety of workers and the public, temporary traffic management arrangements and phased road closures will be implemented over the 13-week period: • Monday 18 May 2026 to Tuesday 30 June 2026: Temporary traffic management will operate between Cambridge Avenue and Grange Road from 09:15 to 16:30 daily to allow for replacement kerbing and footway upgrades.
• Wednesday 1 July 2026 to Thursday 9 July 2026: Galgorm Road will close entirely between the Sourhill Road roundabout and Dans Road for carriageway resurfacing. Motorists will be diverted via Sourhill Road and Dans Road, or alternatively via Old Galgorm Road.
• Monday 27 July 2026 to Monday 17 August 2026: Galgorm Road will close between Dans Road and Grange Road for carriageway resurfacing. A diversion route will be active via Old Galgorm Road.
The Department for Infrastructure has planned the operations to keep local disruption to a minimum. Local access will be maintained where feasible, but road users are advised to expect delays, plan additional travel time, and adhere to all temporary traffic restrictions.
Progress remains dependent on favorable weather conditions, with the department targeting substantial completion by Monday 17 August 2026. Ongoing updates regarding the project will be shared via TrafficwatchNI.
