Omagh Resurfacing Works Prompt Series of Weekend Road Closures

A series of full weekend road closures will take place across May and June to facilitate essential resurfacing works at a key junction in Omagh. The affected routes include Mountjoy Road, Old Mountfield Road, and Lisanelly Avenue.

The Department for Infrastructure has confirmed that the wider carriageway improvement scheme along the Mountjoy Road and Gortin Road is moving forward steadily, targetting a final contract completion date of October 2026. This infrastructure investment is a vital element of the Department of Education's development plan for the upcoming Strule Shared Education Campus (SSEC).

Construction initially commenced late last year, designed to handle the projected surge in pedestrian, public transport, and vehicular traffic once the new campus opens. Once fully complete, the updated network will establish a critical link to the site from the north and west of the town, building upon the infrastructure delivered via the Strathroy Link Road project back in November 2019.

To safely execute the upcoming resurfacing at the junction of Mountjoy Road, Old Mountfield Road, and Lisanelly Avenue, the road will be closed continuously during three specific weekend windows:

• Saturday 23 May from 6.00 am until 6.00 pm

• Friday 5 June from 8.00 pm until Monday 8 June at 6.00 am

• Saturday 20 June from 6.00 am until Monday 22 June at 6.00 am.

Clearly signed diversion routes will be operational throughout the closure periods:

Main Diversion Route: Mountjoy Road, Gortin Road, Strathroy Road, Strathroy Link Road, Derry Road, Abbey Street, McConnell Place, Sedan Avenue, and vice versa.

Local Diversion Route: Old Mountfield Road, Killyclogher Road, Campsie Road, Market Street, Drumragh Avenue, and vice versa.

The Department has coordinated closely with the SSEC contractor to design traffic management arrangements that minimise public disruption. Motorists are advised to factor extra time into their travel plans and adhere to the designated diversion signs. Access will remain available for emergency services, local deliveries, and property owners.

Progress on the resurfacing remains subject to favourable weather conditions, and the public will be updated regarding any changes to the schedule. All onsite operations will adhere to current health and safety and public health guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for contractors and staff.

Both the Department and the main contractor have extended their thanks to local road users for their ongoing patience throughout the delivery of these critical road improvements.
