Man Charged Over North Belfast Knife Attack Due to Appear in Court
A 30-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following a serious knife attack in the Kinnaird Avenue area of north Belfast on Monday 8th June.
The suspect is also charged with threats to kill and possession of an article with a blade or point in a public place. He is scheduled to appear before Belfast Magistrates' Court today, Wednesday 10th June. As part of standard legal procedure, all charges will be subject to review by the Public Prosecution Service.
The charges follow a fast-paced investigation into the incident, which occurred at approximately 10.30pm on Monday. The Police Service of Northern Ireland has since clarified that the suspect is understood to be a Sudanese national.
The victim, a man in his 40s, remains in hospital in a serious condition, having suffered significant injuries to his face, back, and eyes. Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson previously confirmed that senior counter-terrorism officials have been consulted. He stated that while the investigation is in its early stages, there is currently no information to suggest the attack was terrorist-related, and police are not seeking anyone else in connection with the inquiry.
The assault has been declared a critical incident, and police have noted calls for protest activity across Northern Ireland. A heightened police presence will be visible this evening to reassure local communities, with senior officers appealing for calm and urging the public to refrain from sharing graphic social media footage of the incident online.
Detectives continue to appeal for witnesses or anyone with relevant CCTV or dash-cam footage to assist the ongoing investigation. Information can be provided by calling the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 1654 08/06/26. Alternatively, reports can be made online via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or www.crimestoppers-uk.org/.
