Critical Flood Risk Management Project Completed on River Lagan

Efforts to manage flood risks along the River Lagan have achieved a significant milestone following the successful installation of new flood gates at Lambeg.

This development follows the completion of engineering works at nearby Hilden last summer, with the new Lambeg installations marking the final finalisation of the overall project. These specialized structures, commonly referred to as sluice gates, play a vital role in regulating river levels and delivering crucial flood protection to local populations situated along the River Lagan, especially during spells of intense rainfall.

Minister Kimmins said: "Collectively these works represent an investment of £1.35 million. Completion will ensure that these structures continue their critical role in regulating water levels along the River Lagan. This will help to manage flood risk for the people of South Belfast for many years to come.

"I visited the Hilden works last summer and I am pleased that this final part of the flood protection works is now in place. Adapting to climate is one of my Department's seven Foundations for a Better Future. While we cannot prevent all flooding from happening, we can reduce the impacts with appropriate infrastructure improvements and development. Schemes like this are a tangible way of delivering on that vision."
