The Police Service of Northern Ireland has launched its 2026 Safer Summer Together campaign on Wednesday 1 July, encouraging the public to make the most of the warmer months while staying alert to potential risks.

Assistant Chief Constable for Local Policing, Ryan Henderson, who is leading the operational activity, said: "We hope that summer sees more of us getting out and about and enjoying time with friends and family in the warmer weather. We want everyone to enjoy the longer days and to stay safe, being mindful of not becoming a victim of crime."

Setting out priorities for the weeks ahead, he added: "This year, our summer guidance and advice covers a range of issues such as home security, online safety, water safety and getting home safe after nights out. We also want to encourage safer driving on our roads; to date in 2026 we have seen 36 deaths in Northern Ireland. That's 36 lives cut short needlessly, leaving families and loved ones devastated by the shock of these losses. Remember our Fatal Five rules: control your speed, put down your phone, don't get distracted, always wear your seatbelt and never drink or drug drive." On micromobility, ACC Henderson said: "We ask that users of e-scooters and e-bikes use them safely, responsibly and legally. Remember, they are not toys and can only be ridden on private land, not public roads or pavements. Under current legislation, e-scooters are deemed to be motor vehicles. They are not approved for on-road use or in another public space. This means the driver requires a driving licence and the vehicle must be taxed, insured and fitted with lights and a number plate. As the vast majority of e-scooters and their riders will not be able to comply with these legal requirements, they are therefore restricted to 'off-road' use only."

Police will also be paying particular attention to anti-social behaviour over the summer months. Assistant Chief Constable Henderson continued: "We would ask everyone to be mindful and respectful of those around them, taking into consideration how their behaviour may affect or cause distress to others. Those who are the victim of anti-social behaviour should not hesitate in reporting it.

He said: "Everyone should be able to enjoy our shared public spaces and we will be on patrol in all towns, cities, major tourist areas and beauty spots around Northern Ireland to ensure everyone's safety."

He also urged people to protect their homes and outbuildings while away: "Ensuring the security of your property is another vital consideration over the summer as many people look forward to getting away from things for a while. It only takes a thief a few minutes to enter your home and take valuables so we encourage everyone to ensure the safekeeping of their house, shed and any other outbuildings.
