£1.5m M2 Resurfacing To Start 17 July With Closures And Contraflow
A £1.5 million major resurfacing scheme on the M2 Motorway will begin on Friday 17 July 2026. The project focuses on the northbound carriageway between Junction 4 Sandyknowes and Junction 5 Templepatrick and is scheduled for completion by Monday 27 July 2026, subject to favourable weather.
To protect road users and the workforce, a programme of lane restrictions, full closures and a contraflow will operate as follows.
Lane 2 in both directions will be closed from 11pm on Thursday 16 July until 6am on Friday 17 July to facilitate preparation works at crossover points and on the central reserve vehicle restraint system.
The M2 will be completely closed in both directions between Junctions 4 and 5 from 8pm on Friday 17 July until 7am on Saturday 18 July. A signed diversion will operate via A6 Antrim Road – A6 Ballyclare Road – A57 Ballyclare Road.
The northbound carriageway will then be closed continuously from 6am on Saturday 18 July until 6am on Monday 27 July between Junctions 4 and 5. Northbound motorists will be routed through a single-lane contraflow on the southbound carriageway; an alternative diversion will also be signed via A6 Antrim Road – A6 Ballyclare Road – A57 Ballyclare Road.
Southbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane between Junction 5 and Junction 4 from 7am on Saturday 18 July until 8pm on Sunday 26 July.
A further full closure in both directions will take place between Junctions 4 and 5 from 8pm on Sunday 26 July until 6am on Monday 27 July, with the same diversionary route in place.
A temporary 50 mph speed limit will apply along this stretch for the duration of the works.
The Department for Infrastructure has planned operations and traffic management to minimise disruption; however, some delays are expected. Road users should allow extra time for journeys and follow the signed alternative routes.

Man Dies In Co Antrim Collision
A man in his 60s has died following a collision in Glenavy, co Antrim. The man was driving a black Skoda in the single-vehicle crash on the Moira Road just after 10am on Tuesday, 18 July. The road remains closed at its junction with Carnkilly Road and motorists are being urged to avoid the area. Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them.
