Ombudsman Rules PSNI's Use Of Force During June Disorder Proportionate
A review by the Police Ombudsman into the PSNI's deployment of water cannon and 'Attenuating Energy Projectiles' (AEPs) during public disorder in June has found the force used was proportionate.
Officers discharged AEPs 20 times and used water cannon to manage disorder on the night of 10 June 2026. Body-worn video examined by Ombudsman investigators was assessed as proportionate.
Fifteen AEPs were fired in Glengormley and five in Portadown.

A civilian police employee who struck a teenager used "necessary force" after being bitten on the hand, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The youth had complained that he had been kicked and punched by four or five civilian detention officers (CDOs) after he was brought to a custody suite in Belfast in July last year.

PSNI Officer Disciplined After Kicking Man During Incident In Belfast
A police officer has been disciplined over using "excessive force" when he kicked a man during an incident in Belfast in July 2015. The officer was with three colleagues when they called at the man's flat at 5am to arrest him for failing to turn up for a court hearing.

Officers Did Not Use Excessive Force Against Vulnerable Woman
A complaint that PSNI officers used excessive force against a vulnerable woman during an incident in Belfast has been rejected by the Police Ombudsman. The woman alleged that officers had twice pushed her against a wall to search her, had "goaded" her, and had also put her in the back of a "police van" despite knowing that this made her fearful.
