Justice Minister Welcomes Arrest Of Fugitive Prisoner Gary Anderson
Justice Minister Naomi Long has welcomed the detention of prisoner Gary Anderson in the Republic of Ireland after a period unlawfully at large. She said an independent review into the circumstances of his compassionate temporary release and subsequent abscondment is being established and confirmed she will meet the family of Karol Kelly later this week.
The Minister said: "I welcome the news that Gary Anderson has been arrested in the Republic of Ireland and I want to thank the Police Service of Northern Ireland and An Garda Síochána for their swift and effective work in locating and apprehending him.
"My thoughts remain with the family of Karol Kelly. They have endured a deeply distressing period, and I hope today's development goes some way towards alleviating the anxiety and uncertainty they have experienced.
"I recognise that questions remain about the circumstances surrounding Mr Anderson's compassionate temporary release and subsequent abscondment. Work is progressing to establish an independent review, and further details will be announced shortly.
"I look forward to meeting with the Kelly family later this week to listen to their concerns directly."

The Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery (ICRIR) has published its first Findings report, following an investigation into the Troubles-related death of Rory O'Kelly in Coalisland, Co Tyrone, on 4 March 1977. Some members of Mr O'Kelly's family requested the Commission's assistance in 2024.
