Killer has sentenced increased

A Belfast man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend more than 60 times has had his jail term increased from 10 to 15 years.

Twenty-three-year-old Conor Gerard Doyle, from the Limestone Road, was sentenced to life imprisonment in June after he admitted stabbing Angela Snoddy, 21, at her home in Glenville Road, Whiteabbey, in October 2002.

However, because Doyle had already served time in custody prior to his trial a parole board could review his case after eight years.

Ms Snoddy's family immediately launched a campaign against the term, with the support of by local politicians, which led to the Attorney General referring the case to the Court of Appeal, on the grounds the sentence was unduly lenient.

On Friday, three appeal court judges decided Doyle's sentence should be extended with Lord Chief Justice Sir Brian Kerr saying courts had a duty to send a clear message to those who engage in violence on women that severe penalties will be imposed on those who are found guilty of it.
