Positive Ageing Month Launches In Belfast With Citywide Activities For Older People
Older residents in Belfast can look forward to a packed programme throughout October as part of Positive Ageing Month. The initiative features a citywide calendar of events and activities tailored for older people.
Now in its 11th year, Positive Ageing Month highlights the wide range of opportunities provided year-round for older people by Age Friendly partners, shining a light on what is available across the city.
Speaking at the launch, the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Roís-Máire Donnelly, said: "Tá áthas orm go mbeidh Mí an Aosaithe Dhearfaigh ag tarlú sa chathair arís den 10ú huair. Tá meas againn i mBéal Feirste ar ár gcónaitheoirí atá ag dul anonn in aois – is tuismitheoirí, seantuismitheoirí, cúramóirí, oibrithe deonacha, ceannairí agus oibrithe pobail iad, tá ról lárnach acu inár bpobal agus tá an iliomad táithí agus críonnacht le roinnt acu.
She continued: "I'm so pleased to see Positive Ageing Month return to the city. Belfast recognises the huge value of our older residents – as parents, grandparents, carers, volunteers, leaders, and community workers, they are central to our society and have so much experience and wisdom to share. "Positive Ageing Month helps bring opportunities for connection, friendship, activity, knowledge, skills development and fun to our older residents through a series of events which are largely free and bring people together in every part of the city.
"We are very proud of our designation as an Age Friendly City. This was awarded to Belfast in 2012 by the World Health Organisation, and helps us create a city that is safe, welcoming and sensitive to the needs of our older residents.
"I hope everyone explores our programme this year, tries out some new things, meets some new people and above all, enjoy Positive Ageing Month."
The programme offers multiple ways to stay active and connected, from exercise classes and coffee mornings to tech workshops and history tours. Beyond council-run sessions, Age Friendly partners are also delivering activities including regular library events, health and wellness workshops, talks and walking tours, information sessions, and arts and crafts — with even a chance to try circus skills.
