The Minister said: "Credit unions play an important role in their local communities by encouraging savings, providing affordable credit, and supporting financial inclusion. We have a particularly strong credit union movement, and the sector is well placed to contribute to wider policy objectives on inclusive growth, community wealth building, and reducing reliance on high-cost credit.

"I look forward to introducing the Credit Unions Bill to the Assembly. This is an important piece of legislation that will have a positive impact on the almost 600,000 members of Credit Unions here."

The Department said the Bill will update the Credit Unions (Northern Ireland) Order 1985, including provisions on membership, governance, operational flexibilities and enabling powers for the sector.
