Fireworks Licence Deadline Looms As Minister Urges Swift Applications
People planning Halloween fireworks are being reminded to submit their licence applications before the approaching cut-off, the Department of Justice has said.
Applications must reach the Department no later than Friday 16 October. Application forms, guidance and a list of registered retailers are available on NIDirect.
Justice Minister Naomi Long said: "The law is clear - if you intend to purchase, possess or use fireworks, a licence is required. It is an offence to buy or be in possession of fireworks without one."
"The Department is currently processing applications as quickly as possible and I would urge anyone who hasn't submitted their application yet, to do so as soon as possible before Friday's deadline in order to have your licence in time for Halloween." Fireworks must be bought only from suppliers registered by the Department of Justice. Buying from illegal sources may be unsafe and could lead to prosecution. Registered retailers should be clearly identifiable, as they are required to display their licence or certificate of registration prominently at the point of sale.
Under the Explosive (Fireworks) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2002, which came into force in May 2002, anyone wishing to purchase, possess or use fireworks must hold a licence.
The licence fee is £30 for events with fewer than 100 spectators and rises incrementally for larger crowds. Only the fireworks listed on your licence may be purchased; if you need different or additional fireworks, you must contact the Department's Firearms and Explosives Branch to amend the licence before buying.
Completed application forms, along with the appropriate fee, should be sent to Firearms and Explosives Branch, Knockview, Stormont Estate, Belfast BT4 3SJ.
Further information and safety advice are available on the NIDirect website, while retailers can find guidance on storage legislation via the NIbusinessinfo website.
