PSNI Responds To Ombudsman’s Findings On Arrests

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has issued a statement after the Police Ombudsman reported on an incident involving arrests at a protest, highlighting the operational complexity of such events.

In a statement, Deputy Chief Constable Bobby Singleton said: "We note the findings of the Police Ombudsman's independent investigation into this incident. The policing of protests can often be complex and challenging involving the dynamic balancing of potentially competing rights.

"Importantly, this investigation found that our officers did not act unlawfully, did not breach police guidance and found no misconduct. There was, however, some shortcomings in aspects of the police response and in the recording of information."

Mr Singleton said the service had examined the recommendations and taken action where appropriate: "We have carefully considered the Ombudsman's recommendations. Action to improve performance has been accepted in respect of two officers. In relation to a third officer, having considered the circumstances and evidence available, it was determined that no further action was required."

Emphasising that the organisation would learn from the findings, he continued: "Policing is a human endeavour and PSNI is a learning organisation. Where an investigation identifies things that we could do better we will address this appropriately. We will also ensure that learning is taken forward to support officers and staff to assist them in delivering the professional service the public rightly expect."
