Man appears in court over Thiepval Barracks bombing

A man has appeared in court in connection with an IRA bomb attack at a Lisburn army base eight years ago.

Michael Gerard Rogan, 44, whose address was given as Culnaraith, Omeath, was arrested in the holiday resort of Playa de las Americas in Tenerife last week.

He was detained on an international arrest warrant after failing to appear at a Belfast court in 1997.

Rogan is charged with causing explosions at Thiepval Barracks in Lisburn in 1996 and also faces two charges of collecting information about prison officers and the security forces, likely to be of use to terrorists.

Lisburn Magistrate's Court heard on Friday that he replied "Not guilty" when charged.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at a preliminary inquiry on 19 November.
