Search for fisherman continues on Lough Erne

The hunt for a missing fisherman, Gordon Duncan, was hampered for a time this morning by heavy fog that blanketed the search area of Upper Lough Erne in County Fermanagh.

Yesterday, Coastguards had expressed hope that the 53-year-old may have found shelter ashore. The missing man, a father of three, is understood to be an experienced fisherman and when he was seen last was wearing a lifejacket.

The search began on Monday afternoon when police informed the Coastguard that a small dinghy had been spotted drifting off shore on Upper Lough Erne by two visitors to Bellanaleck marina. Police said that a man had been seen fishing from the dinghy around lunchtime on Monday. They visitors later contacted police when they saw the dinghy empty and drifting.

When retrieved later near Cleenish Island, the dingy was found to contain various belongings including a fishing rod.

The search is resumed today as soon as the fog dispersed suffiiently.
