Recovered money not from £26.5m bank raid
Two men arrested after £42,000 was recovered in Co Down have been released on police bail.
The money was recovered after a large number of £100 Northern Bank notes were spent at a Co Armagh shopping centre at the weekend, however police have said the money is not connected to last month’s £26.5 million robbery at the Northern Bank head office in Belfast.
Staff at the Rushmere Centre in Portadown became suspicious after a number of people tried to buy low value items, such as magazines, with high denomination notes on Sunday.
Two houses and business premises in Banbridge were subsequently searched on Monday morning and £42,000 was recovered.
Meanwhile, Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness has said now was not the time for the governments to “throw in the towel” on political talks following last week's accusations by PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde that the IRA was behind the Northern Bank robbery in December.
“It is disappointing that people are prepared to accept the word of Hugh Orde despite the fact he has not produced one iota of evidence to suggest that republicans were behind this robbery,” the Mid-Ulster MP said.
“His political intervention was as a result of intelligence reports from faceless securocrats who have a less than honourable record in this country.
“I reject outright accusations of double-dealing and dishonesty and stand on our record.”
Secretary of State Paul Murphy is expected to make a statement on the raid in the House of Commons later on Tuesday.
