Coleraine chicken processing plant to axe 70 jobs
Around 70 jobs are to go at the Farm Fed Chickens processing plant in Coleraine.
Blaming the cuts on a failure to secure a recent order, the Co Londonderry firm first informed staff of the decision to shed jobs last Friday.
Management at the firm said they were trying to attract new orders and were looking at increasing some orders already on the books.
However, the Transport and General Workers Union has said it is concerned not only about the jobs losses and but also about the future of the remaining staff.
Ulster Unionist MLA for East Londonderry, David McClarty spoke of his “deep regret” at the news.
In a statement, he said: “I deeply regret the news that so many jobs are under threat at the company. Farm Fed Chickens is a major employer and this news represents a serious blow to the area.
“I will be contacting management at the company in an effort to explore all options available in order to help safeguard these jobs.
“I hope that Farm Fed, which has served the community well over the years, will be able to win back orders, so that both the company and the workforce can bounce back from this."
