Priest treated for shock following robbery

An armed man in Armagh robbed a Roman Catholic priest on Monday.

The clergyman was leaving the Parochial Hall at Cathedral Road, Armagh just before 9.45pm when a man armed with a claw hammer and replica firearm threatened him.

It is understood the robber made off towards Edward Street with a soft leather case containing an undisclosed sum of money raised at a bingo session, which he wrestled from the priest during the robbery.

The assailant is described as about 6ft 2in tall of medium build and was in his late 30’s to early 40’s and spoke with a local accent. He had mousy brown coloured hair, blue jeans, a red jumper and used a black scarf to cover his face.

The priest was uninjured but treated for shock following the incident.

Anyone with information about the robbery or the identity of the man involved should contact detectives at Armagh on 028 3752 3311 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
