Catholic church damaged in Co Down

A Catholic church in Co Down has been damaged by vandals over the weekend.

The chapel in the Maypole Hill area of Dromore is believed to have been damaged on Saturday afternoon after the contents of the main body of the chapel were strewn over the floor of the church ground while the altar had been tampered with. Police believe the chapel was entered sometime between 2pm and 4pm.

Two male minors and their families have been spoken too and the children have been referred to the youth diversion officer.

Elsewhere, detectives in Omagh are appealing for information following an arson attack at a house in Lakemount Road on Saturday morning.

The fire was started under a bed in a bedroom at the front of the house. The bed and bedroom were substantially damaged however the occupants were not home at the time of the fire.

Police are also investigating two other fires at this property which are being treated as suspicious and which took place on the 22nd April and 30th April.

Church hall damaged in fire
Police are investigating a fire that gutted a church hall in Newcastle, County Down. The hall, belonging to the Our Lady of the Assumption Church, was severely damaged in the blaze which was spotted shortly after 4.30 am on Tuesday morning.

A Catholic church in Co Down has been damaged by an overnight fire. Police believe the blaze, which damaged a confessional box in Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Newcastle, was started deliberately.

Firefighters Save Church After Police Tip-Off
A 130-year-old Bangor church was badly damaged in an overnight blaze and only saved when a passing police beat raised the alarm. But despite firefighters; best efforts, Bangor Parish Church on Hamilton Road will be out of use for several months as a 30ft part of the roof was destroyed and the interior is smoke-damaged.
