Man arrested in connection with 1981 murder

Detectives investigating the murder of a nine-year-old girl in Co Down nearly 25 years ago have today arrested a man on suspicion of her murder.

Jennifer Cardy was discovered dead by two fishermen at McKee's Dam near Hillsborough in 1981 after being snatched as she cycled to a friend's house on 12 August that same year.

Her red bike was discovered in a field beside a hedge, near her home, and her body was found six days later.

The 58-year-old man arrested on Monday is currently in custody at Antrim Police Station, and will be interviewed by officers later.
