Pensioners targeted in six separate burglaries

Six separate burglaries on pensioners across Northern Ireland at the weekend have cast a shadow over today’s crime figures which claimed that burglary figures were continuing to fall.

In west Belfast, two robbers kicked open the door of a 75-year-old woman’s house in the Glencolin area at about 4.45am on Sunday. The men demanded cash before making off with her handbag which contained cash, a bank card and bank books.

The victim, who is paralysed down the left hand side of her body, was left uninjured but shocked in the incident.

In south Belfast, three men kicked in the door of a house belonging to a 100-year-old woman at about 2am on Saturday.

At around the same time an elderly couple in Ballymena woke up to find a masked man with his hand over the woman’s mouth before pulling her from the bed and demanding money.

Earlier on Saturday, four masked men held an 80-year-old man down in his home in Banbridge before demanding cash. In Newtownabbey, four intruders held down a 79-year-old man and ransacked his bedroom in the Glebecoole area at about 3.30am.

In Lisburn, a 75-year-old woman was robbed in her home after two youths wearing masks broke into her home at around 10pm on Friday.
