Police guilty of ‘corporate failure’ after gate death
The police have been guilty of “corporate failure" after a man died at a police station in Co Tyrone two years ago, the Police Ombudsman has said.
Ciaran Connelly, 28, was seriously injured after being crushed by large gates as he tried to leave Strabane police station in March 2003.
He was immediately taken to Altnagelvin hospital in Londonderry however he later died of injuries to the head and upper body.
Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan said that while no officer on duty at Strabane Station bore any responsibility for Mr Connolly’s death, the PSNI was guilty of what she described as “corporate failure” in relation to the safety of the gates.
She said that the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland was still considering whether any charges should be brought against police.
Following an internal health and safety investigation by the PSNI, 17 recommendations were made which had been mirrored by the ombudsman's report and the HSENI.
So far, some £500,000 has been spent in improving gate safety, which is constantly being monitored.
