Cross border co-operation to combat crime
A new agreement to close the door on cross border crime such as sex offences and drug abuse has been signed in Belfast.
Criminal Justice Minister David Hanson and the Irish Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Michael McDowell announced the new arrangements on Tuesday, which also aim to give better support to victims of crime.
Mr Hanson said: “Crime does not stop at the border and neither should co-operation. Existing protocols between the PSNI and An Garda Síochána, employed to great effect after the Northern Bank raid, have demonstrated the benefits of working together to combat crime.
"This agreement will be a vehicle to sharpen the impact of existing cooperation between the two jurisdictions on wider criminal justice issues."
As part of an agreement between the two governments that will enhance co-operative working between the criminal justice agencies in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, information will be shared on issues of mutual interest and concern.
The agreement will also enable criminal justice organisations in Northern Ireland and the Republic to forge closer links in the fight against crime.
Priority areas to be targeted include the exchange of information on registered sex offenders, drugs trafficking and support for victims.
