Two arrested following serious assault

Two men have been arrested in connection with a serious assault in Londonderry at the weekend.

The 37-year-old victim was assaulted in the Rosemount area of the city at around 5am on Saturday. He is currently being treated at Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where his condition is said to be critical.

Police described the attack as "brutal" and are trying to establish a motive. It is understood that four young males were seen running away from the scene at the time of the incident.

Anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident are being asked to contact police.

They specifically want to talk to a taxi driver who may have seen the victim prior to the attack.

A 16-year-old girl has been arrested after two police officers were injured as trouble flared in Belfast overnight. Petrol bombs and masonry were thrown at the officers in the Woodvale Road area at around 12.50am on Wednesday. No petrol bombs made contact, however two police officers were injured after bottles were thrown at them.

Serious assault in Belfast city centre
Police have appealed for information in relation to a serious assault in Belfast city centre at the weekend. An altercation broke out between two men outside the Ulster Hall in Bedford Street at around 6pm on Saturday evening, which resulted in a 56-year-old man being seriously injured. The man remains in a critical condition in hospital.
