Murder inquiry after attack victim dies

Police in south Belfast have launched a murder inquiry following a serious assault in Belfast city centre at the weekend in which a man died.

The victim, a 56-year-old man who has not yet been named, died in hospital last night as a result of an altercation with another man opposite the Ulster Hall in Bedford Street at around 6pm on Saturday September 2.

It is understood that the area was busy at the time, and police have asked for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them.

They are especially keen to speak to a female Australian tourist who ran into a nearby restaurant and asked for someone to call the police.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "The woman was carrying a rucksack and police believe she may have travelled on anywhere in Northern Ireland or into the South of Ireland or across to the UK."

One man has been arrested in connection with the assault and is currently being questioned by police.

Anyone with any information should contact detectives on 0845 600 8000 or anonymously on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.
