UU welcome Kosovan delegation
A delegation of Albanian and Serbian politicians from Kosovo will be arriving at the University of Ulster this week to learn from Northern Ireland’s experiences of local government.
Dr Billy Leonard, from the Northern Ireland Centre for European Co-operation (NICEC) based at the Magee campus, hopes the visit will create opportunities for politicians and community representatives to share aspects of local government responsibilities in a peace building and partnership context.
“This visit is part of the Centre’s work in Diversity and Conflict Management,” Dr Leonard said. “The fact that Serbs and Albanians are together studying aspects of our situation here is an achievement in itself. After the study visit is complete the politicians will continue working together at local municipal level back in Kosovo.
“There are many lessons to be learned from the Northern Ireland situation," Dr Leonard continued. "The history of our councils and community relations’ issues will give the Kosovan politicians valuable insight. The establishment of Local Partnerships as a model for communities working together is something that we now take for granted but can give a framework for implementation elsewhere.”
The NICEC project is funded by Peace II through the Office of First Minister and Deputy First Minister under Measure 4.1 ‘Outward and Forward Looking Region’. This visit is organised in conjunction with INCORE, the University’s international conflict research centre.
