Ministers launch €2.5m tourism initiatives

Around €2.5 million (£1.7 million) is to be spent on two tourism initiatives to market the North West and North East regions as vibrant tourist destinations.

Destination North West, a joint marketing campaign, aims to enhance the visitor experience to Derry, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim.

The Glens and Lakelands project, the North East initiative, plans to increase the competitiveness and sustainability of tourism businesses in the North East of Northern Ireland and the Cavan and Monaghan area.

Tourism Minister Angela Smith said: "With the launch of the North West and North East initiatives this region can be marketed as a seamless experience for tourists on both sides of the border.

"Regional tourism partnerships play an important part in developing the local economy through tourism projects such as these and I commend the Special European Union Programmes Body for funding both programmes."

Irish Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, John O'Donoghue said: "These initiatives will go along way to ensuring that this region is well placed to reap the full benefits of the tourism growth enjoyed by the island as a whole."

Mrs Smith and Mr O'Donoghue launched the cross-border initiatives at the Guildhall in Londonderry on Tuesday.
