PSNI launch non-emergency contact number
The Police Service of Northern Ireland has announced the launch of a new non-emergency phone number to make it easier for people to contact police and to improve the quality of service to the public.
The 0845 600 8000 number will connect directly to local police who will put the caller in contact with the appropriate station or individual in the Police Service.
Police stress that the new number is for non-emergencies only and if the call relates to an emergency - a situation where there is a danger to life, a threat of violence or a serious crime in progress - then 999 should be used as normal.
Assistant Chief Constable Roy Toner launched the new non-emergency number at the Call Management room at Lisburn Road police station in Belfast.
He said: “This new single non-emergency number is the first step in a package of measures designed to make it easier for communities to contact the police and thus assist the Police Service of Northern Ireland to further improve our quality of service to the public.
“The new number will be used in conjunction with current numbers, so if a caller needs to speak to a specific member of staff or station and already knows the direct number, he or she should continue to use it. This will help police deal with other calls more efficiently, thanks to new telephony products, new systems and training programmes for staff.”
A public awareness campaign via television adverts and posters will promote use of the 0845 600 8000 number which will be charged at local rates though mobile network charges may vary.
While the number may not be available on non-UK mobile networks, for example in some border areas, local station numbers will remain available.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

£165,000 Worth Of Illegal Tobacco Seized In L'Derry
Officers from the Local Policing Team 3, along with colleagues from HMRC, conducted a search of a vehicle in the L'Derry area on Monday, 15 September. The operation resulted in the seizure of a quantity of illegal contraband tobacco with an estimated street value of £165,000.
