Pensioners attacked in South Down

Two pensioners have been attacked during separate robberies in South Down last night.

In the first incident, four masked men assaulted an 85-year-old man at his home in Rostrevor at around 8.15pm.

The robbers pushed their way into the man's home in the St Rita's Park area of the town, before ransacking it.

They made off with the pensioners wallet and a sum of cash, in a dark coloured estate car.

The second incident occurred approximately fifteen minutes later, in nearby Warrenpoint.

A 92-year-old woman suffered injuries to her face and neck during a robbery in her home in the Ashgrove area of the town.

The woman's 62-year-old son came downstairs to find a member of the gang of men, with his hands around his mother's throat.

The men then ran off, but the pensioner's son threw a walking stick at their car breaking the rear window of their dark coloured estate.

A police spokeswoman said: "In both cases the victims were deeply upset and traumatised."

Detectives believe that the two incidents may be connected and have asked for anyone who may have witnessed anything in connection with either incident to contact them on 0845 600 8000, or on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.
