Escaped murderer recaptured

Police have recaptured a convicted murderer who escaped in Larne yesterday after being granted a six-hour compassionate release from Magahberry prison to visit his sick father.

Stephen Jeffery Wilson, 38, was accompanied by two prison wardens and a probation officer when he absconded.

Wilson was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 12 years on 15 June 1989, for the murder of Brendan Kelly in Brighton in December 1987.

He was moved to prison in Northern Ireland for family reasons.

The Northern Ireland prison Service have today confirmed that this is the second time Mr Wilson had gone on the run, after managing to escape when he was allowed out to attend his mother's funeral in 2001.

The Prison Service has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.
