Serious assault in west Belfast

Police have appealed for information following a serious assault in west Belfast at the weekend.

Just before midnight on Saturday, a 17-year-old male was attacked by a number of assailants on the Norglen Crescent area of city.

It is understood that iron bars and a claw hammer were used in the assault in which the victim sustained serious head injuries.

His condition is not thought to be life threatening and a motive for the attack has not yet been established.

A short time later, detectives were alerted to a hi-jacking incident in South of the city.

The attack took place at around 12.20am, close to the Kings Hall on the Upper Lisburn Road.

The driver was travelling along Balmoral Avenue in his Seat Ibiza car, when he heard a loud noise and pulled in.

As he got out of his car, a second vehicle with a number of people on board pulled in behind him.

Two men aged between 21-23 years who were armed with iron bars got out of the vehicle and threatened the man.

One of the thieves then got into the victim’s car and drove off.

The first thief was described as about 6ft tall of medium build with dark hair.

He was wearing dark coloured clothing and a dark baseball cap.

His accomplice had a shaven head and is believed to have been wearing a white top.

Police have asked for anyone with any information in relation to either incident, or may know of the whereabouts of the metallic green Seat Ibiza, registration number VRMIKZ 6420, should contact them on 0845 600 8000 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
