Police Federation hit out at shooting 'leak'

The Police Federation for Northern Ireland has hit out at a leak of information to the media regarding the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Stephen Colwell in Ballynahinch on Easter Sunday.

The Federation is demanding an inquiry into a leak of information allegedly from the Ombudsman's office to the BBC, which ran a story revealing details of the incident.

In an open letter the Police Federation said: "Coverage of this nature is extremely unhelpful whether the information contained in the news story is factually correct or not.

"The information together with speculation inevitably leads to trial by the media and further overexcited outbursts by politicians and other commentators on what was a tragic incident and which will inevitably have lasting personal consequences. Selective leakage of information can only add further distress to the parties involved and may impinge upon the proper working of the enquiry process."

The Federation said that the leaked information should not have been available beyond the Police Ombudsman's office and the PSNI.

Stephen Colwell was shot by a police officer as the stolen car he was driving approached a police checkpoint.

Three men and a woman who were in the vehicle have since been released on bail.
