Teenage girl is hit by fire engine

A teenage girl is critically ill in hospital after being hit by a fire engine in south Belfast.

The accident happened in Upper Dunmurry Lane at around 8pm on Tuesday evening, when the 18-year-old girl was struck by a fire engine on its way to the Stewartstown Road.

The girl, from the Poleglass area, was immediately taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital, where she received treatment for head injuries.

It is believed that the vehicle, which had its siren and emergency lights on at the time, struck the girl in the middle of the road. The Fire Service have said that two officers in the front of the vehicle were deeply shocked following the accident, and that their thoughts are with the girl and her family.

The police are carrying out an investigation into the incident, while the Fire and Rescue Service have launched their own inquiry into the circumstances of the accident.
